Letters to Editor

Ahmadiyya issue

Sakhawat Hossain Gulshan, Dhaka

I refer to the informative letter of Mr Ghulam Sarwar from Karachi printed on 03 September. He deserves our praise for his concern about Bangladesh and giving out two important Hadiths on this issue. In any society, if the half educated clergy and their zealots get upper hand then the future is bleak. Some of our so-called Alems are giving bad names to Islam and our country by their twisted interpretation of religion and inciting simple people to mob violence. Any talk on freedom of conscience and worship will be swept under the term “murtad” and progressive ideas will be sniggered as “bedat”. There is such an enlightened term called “ijtihad” which means the use of reason to apply Quranic injunctions to contemporary values. Our Alems rarely talk about Ijtihad because it will require depth of knowledge which very few of them have.

Will some of our knowledgeable readers throw more light on this?
