Ahmadiyyas in Bangladesh fear attacks
Wednesday Dec. 28, 2005,DHAKA: The Ahmadiyya community said on Saturday it was worried about more violence against its adherents in Bangladesh in the wake of recent violent attacks that left dozens injured. The apprehension came after police on Friday clashed with activists of the International Khatme Nubuwat Movement during a demonstration in Dhaka.
At least 50 people were injured in the clashes. “We are apprehensive about fresh attacks by the hard-liners,” SM Tauhidul Islam, a spokesman for the Ahmadiyya community, told The Associated Press. He said their people were being threatened across Bangladesh, a Sunni Muslim-majority nation of 140 million people.
The group demands the government bring a bill in the parliament to declare the Ahmadiyyas non-Muslims. The hard-liners also want a ban on their writings and missionary activities. After Friday’s clashes the hard-line group in a statement announced fresh programmes to seize “mosques” of the Ahmadiyyas in parts of Bangladesh. ap (Source : Daily Times 25/12/05)
